I don't have too much to say about the Youth Week Sk8 Jam. It was the first year we held it at the Fleetwood Sk8 Park, and usually I get a huge turn out at this park. This contest was a little different, whereas the majority of participants were in the Advanced and Sponsored categories, which is awesome. A lot of people skate Fleetwood every day as their Local Park, and the more experienced kids destroy the place. I was looking forward to seeing some really talented runs, but then it rained...

I would say there was about 60-70 people skating before the contest began. Everybody was skating really good, landing all their tricks and having a good time. The beginner category only had about 15 kids in it, which is very rare. Usually, the majority of the day is spent running the Beginner Category. We went through the kids right quick. Wesley Skinner started things off by landing almost every trick he tried in his first run. Ciaran Wright landed a ton of tricks also, and even kickflipped the 3 block (after time). Brayden Sherbon threw down a bunch of tech tricks and ended up taking home the 1st place prize. The biggest surprise in the Beginner Category was 7 year old JR. He was blasting differnet grabs out of the quarter pipe no problem, and skated with a ton of confidence. I have been waiting for this moment, and I can't wait till Summer to see how good JR, Nick, Jayden, and Keinan will become.

Intermediate was kind of funny. No one could land anything at first. Finally, somebody had a good run and then everyone was landing all their tricks again. Highlights would include, Brett Cemaiko breaking his board on a frontside 180 down the 3 block, Calvin Digrard's Double Kickflip over the hip, and Ryan Brynelson showing off his crazy Freestyle skills.

Of course, as soon as it was time for Advanced and Sponsored, it started to rain... Most of the people that were signed up didn't want to skate. The obstacles were very slippery, but there was still lots that went down on the flat ledges and flat bar. Frontside blunt slides, fakie flip tailslides, switch crooks, frontside feeble 180's, tons of tough tricks. Derrick Mayer was trying powerslide tricks in the quater pipe, and ate it hard a couple of times. Not much enthusiasm because of the rain, but at least people still participated. It was a real shame - I was looking forward to seeing what all these amazing Advanced and Sponsored skaters were going to throw down at the most skated Surrey Sk8 Park. I guess I'll have to wait until Summer...

CalStreets Protest Corner with Hippie MikeI walk down the street singing a song to myself. I see kids with their headphones, enjoying the sounds of music. I think of a seminar I was at one time and we had to create a song with whatever objects we could find inside the room we were in. I think of death, depression, heart-ache and love. I think about everything I have been through in my life so far, the battles I've faced, the quests I have been on, the challenges I have conquered, and all of my best accomplishments. Whatever I think about, I can relate it all to music. Whether it was a song that understood, or a song that taught me how to make it through; songs of inspiration, songs of love, songs of Freedom.

Music has changed so much over time. There is a humongous selection of artists and musical genres out there for us to choose from and enjoy. I wish people would take more time to experience all types of music. So many people find their genre and stick to it. They categorize types of music and decide to never give certain types a chance. That is like not taste testing food. How will you know what you like and what you dislike if you don't ever try it.

I listen to everything. From Beethoven to Arch Enemy, from NWA to Carly Simon, Neil Young to Metallica, Bob Marley to Waylon Jennings, Scorpions, Guns N' Roses, Sarah McLachlin, Statler Brothers, Judas Priest, BB King, Bob Dylan, Young MC, Madonna, Nirvana, NOFX, Marvin Gaye, Beach Boys, it goes on and on forever. Music is out there to enjoy. Music is out there to teach. Music is out their to relate your life to. Living through the music...

When I was a teenager, I went through a long stage of depression. Was I really depressed, or just confused about who I was and where I belonged? Life just wasn't working out the way I felt it should have. I was lost in the tall trees and didn't know which way to start walking. This was when I really turned to my music. At that time I mainly listened to Punk Rock, Old School Rap, 70's Rock, 80's Hair Bands and Bob Marley.
