CalStreets presents Hippie Mike's South Surrey Contest Results July 11th, 2009
It was a gorgeous day out, a little humid and very hot, but beautiful. Tons of kids came from all over Surrey, Vancouver and Abbotsford. What was weird was how there was almost no Park Locals there, other than in Beginner. I thought that was really cool to see the Advanced Category filled up with 14 people and only 3 of them actually skate at South Surrey on a regular basis. Hopefully all these guys keep traveling out to all my events and we could see big numbers in this Category again. South Surrey ParkEveryone had a great time, no one got hurt, and lots of awesome skating went down. The new Mini Category is a blessing in so many ways. It helps to make the contest a lot faster and it really makes a difference for the kids competing. The same 3 kids from Kwantlen Park ended up in Top 3 again, but in a completely different order. Max finished in 3rd, Jaden in 2nd, and Nick Logan destroyed the whole park and took 1st Place - No Doubt. I can't believe how awesome these kids are getting. Nick was doing rock fakies on the 6 foot quarter pipe and grabs out of the Deep End of the Bowl, JR was blasting ollies off of the big downslope ledges, Max was hitting effortless kickflips and slide tricks, kids were dropping in on the Barricade, and of course Jaden Dahl threw down a bunch of his signature Heel Flips all over the park. And these are all 10 years old or less. Awesome!!! I can't wait to see who the first person to bump one of these three out of the Top 3 will be...
Nick Logan Way too much stuff Beginner was just as good. All the kids skated really hard and evenly. Tough Contest to judge. Dakota Dahl doing "Sac Taps" out of the Deep Bowl, Matt Phillips slashing up the Quarter Pipes, Curtis, Zappa and Dillan throwing down all kinds of Old School hand varials and boneless tricks, Ciaran and Clayton busting Flip Trick and slide tricks all over the place, and then Austin Beattie landing everything he tried - again - taking home 1st Place two contests in a row.
South Surrey - Beginners and Mini's Speaking of 2 wins in a row, guess who took home 1st Place in Beginner - Jaden Easton-Ellett of course. Jaden loves skating the Transition, and just happened to be helping Shawn Hasselaar teach Skateboard Lessons at South Surrey Park all last week. Looked like Jaden was spending a lot of time working on new tricks to do at the Contest, because he landed a ton of Creative and Awesome tricks. Steven Burke skated the Park like he grew up there, with mellow style and cool tricks everywhere. He made use of most of the obstacles, and everything that he landed was pretty much perfect - 2nd Place. 3rd Place went to Fighter who had a sick first run, landing tons of tough tricks, including a perfect 50-50 grind down the kinked rail first try. He even 180'd out later. Plus Fighter took the Best Trick Contest out of the Bowl Launch with a Nose Garb to Finger Flip, beating out the Amazing Andrew Anderson's Double Airwalk. I think my favorite part of Intermediate was Brendan Nielsen trying to Acid Drop off the Biggest thing there. Jaden tried it to end his 2nd run (I think that's part of Jaden's Master Plan this year - always Acid Drop off the Biggest Obstacle in the Park to finish his 2nd run) but he couldn't ride away, so Brendan tried to 1-up him, but it took 4 or 5 tries. The crowd was loving it, and Brendan kept going for it until he rode away. I love stuff like that, when someone just says forget it about the rest of their run to land 1 Crowd Pleaser Trick. Good Job Buddy.
We actually had a Girls Category this time, thanks to Desiree. There was 1 Girl who wanted to enter but wouldn't if she was the only one, so I asked our friend Desiree to try and skate around on my board. She reluctantly agreed. It was funny. Sasha rode around the entire Park with speed and confidence, and Desiree just tried to control my crazy skateboard. They both did good.
The Advanced was really Awesome The Advanced was really Awesome,14 people. Scott Frost started things off by doing huge ollies over all the ledges, Andrew Anderson toar up the spine section and the entire Bowl, LMUS Jordan destroyed the ledges, Jay Mykyte skated like only he knows how showing off the "Jay Mykyte Styles" landing all his tricks butter. Everybody had good runs, but Jay's style and stomps, Andrew's HUMUGOUS airs, and Jordan's effortless kickflip grinds put them in the Top 3.
South surrey - Intermediates and Girls
After the contest, there was a Best Trick Contest on the "Ledge and Rail Set-up". Fighter had the lead for a while with a 50-50 180 down the kinked rail, Justin Lintunen Board slid the kink rail to fakie 1st try, Nate Frank stuck down a solid BS Nollie 5-0 down the ledge, but Andy Retieffe took it home with a Pop Shovit 50-50 Shovit back down the ledge - Banger! All in all, an awesome day... RESULTS MINI 1. Nick Logan; 2. Jaden Dahl; 3. Max Stephans; 4. Riley Allen, JR Barron; 5. Shayle Dahl, Robbie Schraek; 6. Alex Dewar, Jonathan Schraek; 7.
